July 4th Liturgy
In honor of July 4th, the liturgy will come from the 1879 Book of Common Prayer, the first prayer book developed for the Episcopal Church. Be prepared for male-dominant language and some different theological assumptions. But also be ready to hear some very familiar wording in the collects and the Eucharistic prayer. Partaking in Holy Communion was a serious undertaking. Those attending services a few days prior were admonished to prepare themselves appropriately to receive the bread and wine. The warning and exhortation are provided for your consideration on the downloadable insert.
Pray, Study, Work A Benedictine Retreat
Saturday, July 17, 9 a.m. 4 p.m.
Is it possible to integrate a life of prayer and work in community? This was the idea that inspired Saint Benedict over 1500 years ago and which remains the vibrant heart of Benedictine practice. Benedictine spirituality seeks to create a daily rhythm integrating prayer, study, and work in a seamless flowing of life in which each moment is equally sacred.
The retreat day is structured to create a balance of community prayer, private reflection and study, a shared lunch, and work, with lots of laughter. Everyone is welcome. Lunch provided. Register by email to Brad Byrum at asalake@yahoo.com.
Meditation & Gospel Reflection, Wed. Mornings
You are invited to join Brad Byrum and the Rev. Sue Thompson at 7 a.m. for a period of quiet, followed by prayers and conversation about next Sunday's gospel reading. We adjourn promptly at 8 a.m.
Volunteers Needed for Occasional Nursery Assistance
Enjoy cuddling little babies? Enjoy handing them back after a while? Volunteer to staff the nursery occasionally! Volunteers are needed for both services. (All volunteers must have completed child abuse prevention training and screening.)
Vicar's Office Hours
Rev. Sue Thompson's office hours are Thursday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. She is also available most other days by appointment (email her or call (650) 359-3364). Monday and Saturday are her days off.
Outreach Funds for Pacifica Resource Center and Al Ahli Arab Hospital
We continue to collect funds to support the Pacifica Resource Center and the Al Ahli Arab Hospital located in Gaza. The Resource Center provides assistance to folks in need of food, funds for housing or other social services. Requests for groceries and rental assistance have risen dramatically over the last several months and show no signs of abating.
Al Ahli Arab Hospital is one of 11 hospitals serving the 1.5 million residents of Gaza. This hospital, a ministry of the Diocese of Jerusalem, continues to care for whoever comes to their door, despite limited fuel, food and medical supplies. Checks should be made out to Pacifica Resource Center or Episcopal Relief and Development, designated to the hospital.
Hospice Volunteers Needed in Pacifica
Mary Lu Murphy attended a meeting recently offered by Mission Hospice talking about the need for volunteers in Pacifica. She has information and would be pleased to tell you about the possibilities. You can email her at marylumurphy06@yahoo.com.
Housing resources in San Mateo County
Do you have an extra room to rent out? HIP Housing, a non-profit organization with 36 years of housing experience, is reaching out to the community to promote its home sharing program.
In tough economic times with rising housing, utility, gas and other expenses, home sharing helps to reduce costs and to save money. Two types of arrangements are facilitated: straight rent exchange and service exchange which involves helping with cooking, cleaning, companionship and other basic services in lieu of or for reduced rent.
All clients are interviewed by experienced staff. They also interview each other and make their own decisions about selecting housemates. Resources on how to interview clients, Living Together Agreements, follow-up support and mediation are also available through this service.
For more information contact: Laura Fanucchi, Director of Programs at (650) 348-6660 x303 or email her at lfanucchi@hiphousing.org.
